    Description

It has been widely reported that Dodge Decoy Company made decoys from the 1880's up into the early to mid 1890's before being bought out by the Mason Decoy Company.  That means that this decoy is likely more than 125 years old.
I believe the paint is a mix of original and old hunters repaint.  While I would not guarantee it, the head almost looks like it could be original paint.  The black on the body is clearly repaint but it roughly follows the original paint patterns and is old.  I would call the white body paint over paint, but it happened a long time ago and does not detract. This bird does have beak carving and what appear to be original glass eyes. Head is slightly loose but does not come off.  The neck filler is gone.  The body silhouette shows a high back and a pleasing upward sloping tail that while not correct to live cans, is certainly attractive on the shelf.  There are no structural cracks or chips on this old warrior.  The bottom of the decoy has two strips of lead and a former owners initials, the line tie is not present.  I have not touched this decoy up in any way, it is exactly as I found it.
This decoy was found in south central Wisconsin and has been in my collection for more than 20 years.
Please look closely at the photos provided as they are an important part of the description.  Feel free to ask any questions that you may have.
